Diocesan schools Supt. Nicholas Wolsonovich retiring effective June 30

YOUNGSTOWN — Nicholas Wolsonovich, schools superintendent for the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, is retiring effective June 30.

“This is my third time to retire,” said Wolsonovich, 70. He meant to retire when he left his assignment as superintendent in the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2008 and when he left as superintendent of the Diocese of Orlando in 2011.

Bishop George V. Murry asked him to take the superintendent position in the Youngstown Diocese on an interim basis in July 2011, but it became permanent a year later, he said.

“I just turned 70, so it’s time to do something else,” he said Friday evening. He is thinking of pursuing consulting and teaching opportunities, “a lot of reading and learn to play the piano.” Wolsonovich said he is “still active, and God has blessed me with good health.”

If his new directions take him outside of the Youngstown area, he may end up back in Chicago or Orlando, where he has children and grandchildren.

In all, he has worked in Catholic schools in the Mahoning Valley, Chicago and Orlando for 48 years, 30 of those as superintendent.

He was superintendent in Youngstown from 1985 to 2001 and principal at Ursuline High School from 1982 to 1985. He was superintendent in Chicago from 2001 to 2008 and in Orlando from 2008 until 2011.
