Youngstown State senior center Chris Elkins (Beaver Falls, Pa.) was named third-team All-American by The Sports Network Wednesday.
Elkins, a two-time first-team all-conference selection, started all 12 games at center for the Penguins this year and played every snap in seven of the 12. He was named the team’s Offensive Lineman of the Game five times this year after moving from guard to center before the season started.
He was one of 14 players from the Missouri Valley Football Conference on The Sports Network’s All-America list.
Pens d-man Engelland suspended 5 games
NEW YORK
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland was suspended for five games without pay by the NHL on Wednesday for a check to the head of Detroit forward Justin Abdelkader.
Engelland was given a match penalty for hitting Abdelkader in the first period of Pittsburgh’s 4-1 road victory Saturday night. The suspension will cost Engelland $14,530.
Blue Jackets’ Prout on IR, out 2-3 weeks

The Columbus Blue Jackets placed defenseman Dalton Prout on injured reserve Wednesday retroactive to Dec. 16 because of an upper-body injury that will likely sideline to miss two to three weeks.
The 23-year-old Prout has two assists, 29 penalty minutes and 41 blocked shots in 24 games with Columbus this season. He had a goal, six assists, 25 penalty minutes and a plus-15 rating in 28 games with the Blue Jackets last season, leading the club in plus/minus while ranking second among rookie NHL defensemen in that category.
The 6-foot-3, 222-pounder was Columbus’ seventh pick, 154th overall, in the 2010 draft.
Sebring names athletic HOF inductees

The Sebring Athletic Hall of Fame will induct two individuals and, for the first time, a team, when the 2013 induction ceremony is held in Sebring McKinley High School’s Brook Gym Dec. 23.
Sebring’s undefeated 1955 football team will be inducted, along with former coach, teacher, principal and superintendent John Garrett and 2001 graduate Erin Eaton, a former basketball and volleyball standout. Eaton is the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg women’s basketball team.
The ceremony will take place between the girls’ varsity and boys’ varsity games against Southington at approximately 7 p.m.
Niles Rotary to host basketball tournament

The Niles Rotary is hosting the 9th Annual Dragon Invitational Basketball Tournament for 5th and 6th grade boys and girls teams at Niles Middle School.
The boys tournament will take place January 24-26, 31 and February 1-2 and 3 if necessary. The girls tournament will take place February 21-23 and 24 if necessary.

Annual bowling benefit event set to fight cancer
The Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association is holding its twelfth annual “Strike out Cancer” benefit bowling tournament at Bell Wick Bowl in Hubbard.
The three-day event take place from Friday, Jan. 31, to Sunday, Feb. 2. The cost to sponsor a lane is $100 with the money raised going to several different cancer care charities. The cost for a couple to bowl four games is $20.
