YSU WR Berassa granted sixth year

Youngstown State wide receiver Jelani Berassa was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

Berassa tweeted this on Tuesday afternoon: “Sooo my coach just lmk [let me know] that i have officially been granted my extra year to play college football #GEEKED #BLESSED #THANKFUL #YSUFOOTBALL”

Berassa, a Miami native, tore ACLs in training camp before the 2010 and 2012 seasons. He appeared in nine games this fall, catching six passes for 74 yards and a TD.

Linsley, Drummond named SI All-America

YOUNGSTOWN

Ohio State senior center Corey Linsley, a Boardman High graduate, and Michigan State junior safety Kurtis Drummond (Hubbard) were named honorable mention All-America by Sports Illustrated.

Linsley, a first team All-Big Ten honoree by the coaches and the media, started all 13 games for the Buckeyes (13-1).

Drummond, a first team all-conference selection by the coaches, started all 13 games for the Spartans (12-1), making 86 tackles, second-highest on the team. He also had four interceptions.

Canfield’s Harmon D-III All-American

Baldwin Wallace University senior punter Matt Harmon (Canfield) was named to the 25-player 2013 American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division III All-America team.

Harmon had his finest season as a collegian and was a first-team All-OAC and first-team All-North Region selection by the D3football.com web site.

The four-year starter led the OAC and was eighth in Division III with a 41.6-yard punting average in 45 attempts.

Bama’s Mosley named AP All-American again

NEW YORK

Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley, Arizona State defensive tackle Will Sutton and Arizona running back Ka’Deem Carey have been selected to The Associated Press All-America team for the second straight season.

Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston from Florida State added All-American to his resume after a spectacular redshirt freshman season. Heisman finalists Andre Williams from Boston College and Northern Illinois’ Jordan Lynch also made the first team.

Williams joins Carey in the backfield and Lynch, the dual-threat quarterback, was chosen as an all-purpose player.

Phantoms to host “Penguins Night”

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Phantoms are hosting the first “Pittsburgh Penguins Night at the Covelli Centre” Jan. 18 against the Muskegon Lumberjacks, which will feature a distinct Penguins theme, promotions, and giveaways.

The Penguins, Ice Zone and the Phantoms also announced the addition of a second Little Penguins Learn to Play Program. Children interested can sign up at the Ice Zone from Dec. 20 until Jan. 6. The program costs $160, and it includes equipment as well as Saturday on-ice sessions.

The ten-week on-ice program starts Jan. 25, and it is limited to the first 25 skaters who sign up on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, contact the Ice Zone at 330-965-1423.
