Frat cuts ties with chapter after student’s death

STROUDSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A national fraternity has revoked its affiliation with a chapter following the death of a New York City college student during what eastern Pennsylvania authorities say was a fraternity ritual.

Pi Delta Psi Inc. said the chapter at Baruch College “violated the values and rules of our organization, including our strict no hazing policy” in what it called “unsanctioned and prohibited events.”

Monroe County District Attorney David Christine says he plans criminal charges following an investigation into the Dec. 8 death of 19-year-old freshman Chun “Michael” Deng after about 30 members spent the weekend at a rented house in the Poconos.

Christine alleges that Deng, one of four pledges, sustained a fatal brain injury after running a gauntlet blindfolded and with a heavy weight on his back.
