Downtown Youngstown street closed for AT&T work Thursday

YOUNGSTOWN — North Phelps Street between Federal and Commerce streets will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday to allow AT&T to make repairs to a service line.

Phelps is too narrow for AT&T vehicles needed to make the repairs to gain access to the location causing the temporary closing.

That exact location was closed to vehicular traffic for months because of a major downtown sewer project. That project was delayed in part because of underground AT&T wires and two duct banks containing telephone conduits were in the path of a proposed sewer line. That city project won’t be finished until about spring 2015.

But the temporary one-day closing has nothing to do with that sewer project, said Charles Shasho, deputy director of the city’s public works department.
