Human-rights activist cancels Ohio visit
CINCINNATI (AP) — The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center says a human-rights activist from northwest Africa has canceled his scheduled visit.
Spokeswoman Natalie Hastings of the Cincinnati center says Biram Dah Abeid is going to Washington instead of the center today. She says the Freedom Center hopes to reschedule his visit for next year.
Abeid is in the United States after recently being named as one of the 2013 winners of the United Nations Human Rights Prize.
The descendant of slaves leads a group called the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement, which aims to end slavery. He is from Mauritania.
The Freedom Center both tells the story of Civil War-era slavery in the United States and highlights modern struggles for freedom.
