University of Akron men’s basketball director of basketball operations Dan Peters will take an indefinite medical leave of absence, beginning today, to begin treatment for pancreatic cancer.

Peters, 59, is in his fifth season with the Zips. To show their support for Peters during his treatment, the Zips will dedicate the season to him and wear a patch consisting of a purple ribbon and the words “4 Pete’s Sake.”

Peters joined the Akron staff in 2009 after time at Ohio State (2004-09) and Cincinnati (1999-2004) as an assistant coach, as well as the head coaching spot at Youngstown State (1993-99). He also was on former Akron head coach Coleman Crawford’s staff for the 1989-90 and 1990-91 campaigns.

Canfield hockey falls in overtime

Senior Nick Crescimanno had a hat trick and added an assist for the Canfield High hockey team, which lost in overtime to Nordonia, 5-4, on Sunday.

The Cards scored three goals in the second period to take a one-goal lead into the third but could not hold on as the Knights tied it with 1:08 left.

TJ Sakkas had three assists, and Noah Guerrieri picked up one for Canfield (1-3, 0-3 Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League). Canfield outshot Nordonia 31-19.

Mooney grad Love earns Nebraska award

LINCOLN, NEB.

Cardinal Mooney High graduate Courtney Love was named Nebraska’s scout team defensive MVP in voting by the players.

Love, a former All-Ohio linebacker with the Cardinals, redshirted this season, his first with the Cornhuskers.

Correction

McDonald senior Bobby Johnson won the Division III state cross country title, helping the Blue Devils capture the team title. A story in Sunday’s paper said Boardman senior Mark Hadley was the area’s lone state champion this fall.

Garcia captures Thailand title

CHONBURI, Thailand

Sergio Garcia won for the Thailand Golf Championship on Sunday for his first victory in a year, closing with a 4-under 68 to beat Henrik Stenson by four strokes.

Garcia had a 22-under 266 total at Amata Spring for his fourth career Asian Tour title. The 33-year-old Spaniard won for the first time since taking the Asian Tour’s Johor Open in Malaysia on Dec. 16, 2012.

Garcia’s girlfriend, Katharina Boehm, served as his caddie.

Stenston, the Swede who swept the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and European Tour’s Race to Dubai season points races, also finished with a 68.

France’s Alexander Levy was third at 14 under after a 69.

Kuchar, English win Franklin Templeton

NAPLES, Fla.

Matt Kuchar and Harris English ran away with the Franklin Templeton Shootout, shooting a 14-under 58 in the final-round scramble to break the tournament course record.

Kuchar and English finished at 34-under 182, playing their last 28 holes at Tiburon in 25 under. They opened with a 64 on Friday in modified alternate-shot play and had a 60 on Saturday in better ball.

The duo beat Retief Goosen and Fredrik Jacobsen by seven strokes, matching the tournament record for margin of victory set by Curtis Strange and Mark O’Meara in 1989 in the inaugural event.

Kuchar and English, who replaced the injured Brandt Snedeker in the field, each earned $385,000. Goosen and Jacobsen closed with a 61.
