Man faces charges

YOUNGSTOWN

A 40-year-old Poland man, who is in critical condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center, is charged with driving under the influence and failure to control after city police found his vehicle in the woods off the Oakwood Avenue ramp to Interstate 680 southbound at 11:49 p.m. Thursday.

Police said they found Michael Niro lying across the front seat of his heavily damaged vehicle, smelling strongly of alcohol and moaning, but otherwise unresponsive. A blood sample taken from Niro, who was on a ventilator at the hospital, was placed in the police evidence room refrigerator, but the police report did not state his blood-alcohol level.

Reservists return

VIENNA

Ten Marine Corps reservists from Detachment-3, Maintenance Co., Combat Logistics Battalion 453 (Det.-3) stationed at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station returned home Friday from a seven-month deployment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Marines were reunited with their families at the Cleveland United Service Organization. They will report midweek to YARS, a spokesman said.

While deployed, the reservists were attached to the Redeployment and Retrograde in Support of Reset and Reconstitution Operations Group (R4OG), based out of Camp Leatherneck. The R4OG receives equipment from units, repairs it if needed and sends it out of the battle space back to the United States.

The reservists were activated in March and deployed from Camp Lejeune, N.C., in May.
