Hilltop Elementary School students were given the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers which they could consider pursing during the school’s 15th annual Career Day Nov. 15. Eighteen professionals, and Hilltop parents, volunteered to share the details of their careers with the students throughout the day.

Exhibitors included the Canfield Fire Department deputy chief and a firefighter/paramedic, a truck driver, an architect, a registered nurse, a dental hygienist, a baker, a banker, a YMCA yoga instructor, an attorney, a flight attendant, an auto detailer/restorer, a Youngstown State University professor of electrical engineering, a writing instructor and college access program coordinator, a registered nurse with the U.S. Public Health Service, a United States Air Force ACFT technician and the director of field turf operation for the Lake County Captains baseball team.

The day was organized by Diane Dankovich, guidance counselor at Hilltop Elementary and C.H. Campbell Elementary.

“Almost all of our exhibitors are new this year and, of course, we have our faithful parents who have been with us for years. We have a phenomenal turnout this year and the jobs they are telling the children about are all very interesting,” Dankovich said.

Some of the displays were interactive and many exhibitors brought visual aides to help them explain more clearly what their job entails.

For example, CFD Deputy Chief Matt Rarick and CFD firefighter and paramedic Troy Kolar brought an oxygen tank and firefighters coats and helmets the children could try on. Sue Runion, assistant bakery manager at Struthers Nemenz IGA, demonstrated how to decorate a cake and, to the delight of the students, passed out samples of icing.

“This day is about the students learning and having fun. We are so thankful for the parents who volunteer their time and knowledge. The kids love it. I still have past students who come up to me in the grocery store and tell me they remember Career Day and how much they enjoyed it,” Dankovich said.
