Heritage Oaks in Sebring was the setting for this year’s Mahoning County 4-H Award Ceremony Nov. 7. Janice Hanna, Extension Educator for Mahoning County 4-H Youth Development, presented Daniel Slagle Jr., Executive Director-Clerk and Joyce Mistovich, Park Commissioner, with The Mahoning County Friend of 4-H Award for 2013.
“As the Mahoning County 4-H Educator, I would like to express my appreciation to Boardman Township Park for the opportunity to facilitate the mission of 4-H at the historic Southern Stables. The mission of 4-H is to empower youth to reach their full potential to become contributing citizens, working and learning in partnership with caring adults, which is very similar to the mission of the Park. The partnership with Boardman Township Park is an opportunity of a lifetime because rarely do 4-H programs have facilities to use as needed, for a wide variety of events for all ages and interest areas,” Hanna said.
Over the years, both the Park and 4-H have supported each other in many events and activities. More recently, when Boardman Township Park acquired the Southern Park Stables from Janie Jenkins, they were excited to partner with 4-H to establish a 4-H Community in Boardman Township for 4-H meetings, educational clinics, community gardens and a place to bring horses and other animals as a method for teaching teamwork, cooperation and leadership.
“The park is deeply honored to receive this award. I believe that our partnership with the 4-H has been an asset for the community we serve and we are very excited about working with 4-H in order to further promote the endless benefits that will evolve from the programs and events offered at the Southern Park Stables,” Slagle said.
The Benefits Are Endless is a by-line of the park and the partnership between the park and 4-H will enhance this concept by adding another dimension of programming and events. The park’s mission is to provide an array of educational and recreational opportunities. The plans of 4-H will definitely add to its diversity.
