Mancini film will be shown on television

Staff report

The new documentary film about Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini will get its television premiere at 10 p.m. Saturday on NBCSN.

The 2012 film follows the former boxing champion from Youngstown from his early years growing up on the South Side to his ascendance to the top of the boxing world.

Using videos and interviews with Mancini and others, it also delves into his career-devastating fight against Duk-Koo Kim, after which the South Korean died.

Youngstown native Ed O’Neill, who stars in the ABC sitcom “Modern Family” and is a close friend of Mancini’s, also appears in the film.

Mancini came to Youngstown in October to host public screenings of the film, which was directed by Jesse James Miller and based on the book of the same name by Mark Kriegel.

“The Good Son” already has won several awards, including first-place at the ShadowBox Film Festival.
