Local families to get free computers
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
The Computer Shoppe and Green Youngstown are teaming up for their third year to give away a free computer to 10 local families this Christmas.
From now until Dec. 20, any kindergarten through 12th-grade student in Mahoning County can go to the Computer Shoppe, 2620 Mahoning Ave., and enter the drawing for a free refurbished HP Dual-Core Processor desktop computer.
The Computer Shoppe refurbished these machines donated for recycling and will give them away to needy students. No purchase is necessary to enter. Students must be present to enter the contest.
The winner will be drawn Dec. 20. Winners do not have to be present at the drawing to win; they will be contacted for pickup in time for Christmas.
“Having a computer at home can help students to do better in school and be better self-directed learners. It also allows parents to be more involved in their child’s education, by helping them with their homework and become more connected with their kids,” said Jennifer Jones, program coordinator of Green Youngstown.
Green Youngstown, a division of the Department of Public Works, was established through cooperation between the Mahoning County Solid Waste Management District and the City of Youngstown.
Programs and services include annual recycling drives for appliances, electronics, tires, leaves and litter cleanups, including two citywide cleanups each year. Visit www.cityofyoungstownoh.com or find the group on Facebook at www.facebook.com/youngstownlitter.recycling.
The Computer Shoppe is a local electronics vendor that accepts used electronics for reuse and recycling. Computers that can be fixed and/or refurbished are resold to the public. Those too outdated are dismantled and the parts recycled. For information, call the business at 330-792-7955.
