Austintown man charged with assault on police officer
Staff report
AUSTINTOWN
Police arrested a township man on charges of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest early Monday.
William Frederick, 45, of Tulane Avenue, entered a not-guilty plea to the resisting arrest charge later Monday in Mahoning County Area Court here. No plea was accepted on the charge of assaulting a police officer.
He has a pretrial hearing at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 6 on both charges before Judge David D’Apolito.
Police were called to a Potomac Avenue residence about 2:30 a.m. Monday for a complaint about a highly intoxicated man who was becoming upset and possibly violent, according to police reports.
When police arrived, they met with Frederick, who seemed very intoxicated, according to the report.
Police say Frederick attempted to go after a relative while they were trying to calm him down.
Officers had to stop him, but he resisted.
One of the officers was struck in the head during the incident.
Officers then placed Frederick under arrest, but he resisted again and fought with the officers, striking an officer in his face and hitting him in the knee.
A stun gun was used to help restrain Frederick, the report says.
Police then took him to Mahoning County jail.
One officer has an injury to his left eye from the incident.
