Campbell’s Sikora earns classroom honor
WAYNESBURG, Pa.
Waynesburg University junior linebacker John Sikora from Campbell recently was named one of just 48 football players on the Capital One All-America Division III football team, which is selected by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Sikora was an honorable mention all-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selection after finishing second among Waynesburg defenders with 70 total tackles, including 7.0 tackles for loss, half a sack, an interception, four pass breakups and a forced fumble.
In the classroom, Sikora boasts a 3.97 cumulative GPA while studying history and social sciences. Earlier this year, he received his second consecutive selection to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 Division III Football Team, which is picked by CoSIDA.
Canfield’s Harmon shines as BW punter

Baldwin Wallace University senior punter Matt Harmon from Canfield has been named to the 2013 Divisioin III football All-North Region first team. Harmon had his finest season as a collegian and was a first-team All-OAC pick.
The four-year starter led the OAC in punting with a 41.6-yard average in 45 attempts, and more importantly had a 39.5-yard net average and dropped 22-of-his-45 punts inside the opposition’s 20-yard line. His average ranked eighth in Division III.
Harmon also earned OAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors vs. Muskingum University. Baldwin Wallace finished 6-4.
Canfield pair set for Queen of Diamonds
CANFIELD
Canfield High softball players recently were selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase North Jan. 4-5 at Kent State University. The two are junior Kara Rothbauer and sophomore Kayla Troxil.
Rothbauer is a two-year letterwinner and starter and for the Cardinals and made first team all-league in 2013. She plays travel ball for Valley Extreme.
Troxil was a pitcher, cathcer and utility player for Canfield and played on the Canfield Junior League team which finished third in the Softball World Series.
Trumbo, Anderson dealt; meetings pick up
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.
The baseball winter meetings got busy Tuesday with a three-team trade that sent slugger Mark Trumbo to Arizona, and Oakland dealt pitcher Brett Anderson to Colorado. In the big deal of the day, the Chicago White Sox acquired outfielder Adam Eaton from Arizona for left-hander Hector Santiago, and the Diamondbacks then sent Santiago and left-hander Tyler Skaggs to the Angels for Trumbo. Arizona also will receive a player to be named or cash from each of the other teams.
Also, Oakland received lefty Drew Pomeranz and minor league right-hander Chris Jensen from the Rockies for Anderson. The A’s also included cash to cover part of the salary of the left-hander, who is due $8 million next season.
Among free agents, Detroit closed in on an agreement with outfielder Rajai Davis for a two-year contract worth $9 million to $10 million, a person familiar with the negotiations said. First baseman-outfielder Garrett Jones and Miami finalized a $7.75 million, two-year contract, catcher J.P. Arencibia and Texas completed a $1.8 million, one-year deal, and right-hander Ryan Webb and Baltimore finished a two-year agreement.
Connecticut wins top pick in WNBA lottery
SECAUCUS, N.J.
The Connecticut Sun won the top pick in the WNBA draft lottery on Tuesday. The Tulsa Shock earned the second pick with the San Antonio Silver Stars getting the third choice and the New York Liberty receiving the fourth pick.
Connecticut, which finished last in the Eastern Conference last season, had a 44 percent chance of winning the top pick. New York and Tulsa each had a 23 percent chance and San Antonio has a 10 percent chance.
