Court continues Pavlik hearing

Court continues Pavlik hearing

CANFIELD

Former world champion middleweight boxer Kelly Pavlik appeared in Canfield court Friday on a theft charge, but officials said his pretrial hearing again will be continued.

Pavlik, 31, had a noticeable facial wound, although he retired from boxing in January.

A cabdriver accused Pavlik of failing to pay his $24 cab fare after leaving a South Meridian Road bar early Sept. 18. The cabdriver took the former boxer to his Canfield home.

Pavlik pleaded not guilty to the charge in a written notice of appearance to Mahoning County Court in Canfield in September.

This is the second time his pretrial hearing will be continued. A date has not been set for the next hearing.

Couple face charges

CAMPBELL

A Youngstown man and woman face drug-possession and open-container charges, respectively, after being pulled over for a traffic violation.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday, city police stopped a car that failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of McCartney Road and Sixth Street.

During the traffic stop, police found two open containers of alcohol in the car, along with a marijuana cigarette.

The driver — later identified as 45-year-old Bernard Hasley of Oakhill Avenue — was charged with possession of drugs and also was cited for the traffic offense.

His passenger — 30-year-old Marilynn N. Tubbs of Gluck Street — was charged with having open containers in the car.

Both Hasley and Tubbs are set to appear in Campbell Municipal Court at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Forgery charge

BOARDMAN

Township police charged a Boardman woman with forgery after her grandmother accused her of cashing 11 checks totaling $15,300.

Jenna Cercone, 23, of Valley View Drive is charged with a third-degree felony of forgery.

Cercone appeared in Mahoning County Area Court here Thursday on the charge. She was released after the arraignment.

Cercone’s grandmother first filed a police report in September. She told police she noticed her checking account was overdrawn and realized 11 checks were written and cashed beginning in July. She was able to obtain copies of the checks from the bank.
