TCTC recommended for Ohio Straight A Fund grant

COLUMBUS — The Trumbull Career and Technical Center in Champion will focus on improving students’ overall health and wellness to raise achievement with a $297,841 grant from the inaugural Straight A Fund Grant program.

The program will award $88.6 million statewide to school districts, and collaborations with colleges, universities, businesses and other institutions to “reduce costs and transform learning,” according to a press release from the Straight A Fund Governing Board.

The board has recommended the funding for TCTC and 23 other applicants. The recommendations go to the Ohio Controlling Board for final approval Dec. 16.

The TCTC proposal stressed that health and wellness are central to student achievement, so the money will be used to increase the nutritious offerings available in the school lunch program, create opportunities for physical activity before, during and after school in a new exercise science classroom and raise student and staff awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
