Some Mill Creek Park roads closed for winter

YOUNGSTOWN

Several Mill Creek Park roads with steep grades, limited to nonexistent shoulders and a lack of guardrails closed Monday to motor vehicles for the duration of the winter.

These closings, which occur every winter, are designed to eliminate the dangers of slippery driving on snowy and icy roads, cut the park’s winter maintenance costs, and reduce the use of road salt and its adverse environmental impact, park officials said.

The barricaded roads are Chestnut Hill Drive between Canfield Road and the Kirkmere Spur, High Drive between the Kirkmere Spur and West Cohasset Drive and Calvary Run Drive between Belle Vista and Milton avenues.

The closed roads may be used during the winter for hiking and cross-country skiing, park officials said.

All roads will reopen to motor vehicles when weather permits in the spring.

Man stabbed by sister

WARREN

Leon Gibson, 31, was treated at an area hospital after being stabbed in the chest by his sister Friday afternoon, police said.

The woman, of the 1300 block of Fifth Street Southwest, reported that she stabbed Gibson, of Williamsburg Street Northwest, in self defense after he broke into her home and assaulted her at 1:52 p.m.

Gibson was gone when officers arrived, but they were able to confirm later that he had been stabbed, said Lt. Jeff Cole of the Warren Police Department.

Cole said he didn’t know what hospital Gibson went to, but neither ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph Health Center nor St. Elizabeth Health Center had any record of him.

Investigators still need to talk to the woman before concluding their investigation, Cole said.
