Recycling Division will close seven drop-off recycling sites
YOUNGSTOWN
The Mahoning County Recycling Division will close seven drop-off recycling sites during the second week in January, after the stream of holiday-related waste subsides, Lou Vega, county recycling director, told the county’s solid waste policy committee this morning.
The seven sites that will close are at the Austintown Township Hall on Ohltown Road, Boardman’s South Avenue fire station, the Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities workshop on Marwood Circle in Boardman, McCune Park off Shields Road in Canfield, Colonial Villas Estates off Goshen Road in Goshen Township, the Jackson Township fire station on state Route 45 and Struthers City Hall on Elm Street.
The sites were selected for closing based on their low usage and proximity to other sites that will remain open, Vega said.
“We were in competition with ourselves and saturating the market and not making the best use of our resources,” by maintaining all those sites, Vega said.
In the short term, the closings are expected to save the county almost $28,000 annually, he said.
After the closings, the county will have 29 recycling drop off sites.
