President resigns

WARREN

Council President Bob Dean, who was defeated in the primary election by former autoworkers president Jim Graham, has resigned his position one month early. Dean said he resigned effective Saturday because he felt it would be best to step aside during discussions about the city’s 2014 budget. Dean, who served as council president one term, was an at-large councilman before serving as council president.

Panel discussion

WARREN

The Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative and Warren Neighborhood Leadership Council will have a panel discussion about violence in Warren at 6 p.m. today at New Missionary Baptist Church, 1590 Tod Ave. SW.

On the panel will be state and local officials and community leaders, such as Warren Mayor Doug Franklin; Robert Fiatal, assistant Ohio attorney general; and Guy Burney with Youngstown’s Community Initiative to Reduce Violence. Thomas Conley, president of the Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League, will moderate.

Sign lighting set

YOUNGSTOWN

The Boulevard Park Block Watch will have a sign-lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. today at the corner of Midlothian and Euclid boulevards.

The block watch on the city’s upper South Side received $4,180 from the Raymond John Wean Foundation’s Neighborhood Success program. The money has paid to plant trees in the neighborhood, and for the lighting of this and a second neighborhood sign, among other projects.

Woman not missing

A city woman whose family feared she had been kidnapped was at St. Elizabeth Health Center late Sunday. Police took Devita Richard, 44, out of their system as a missing person.

Richard was missing Sunday from her East Philadelphia Avenue residence. Her son said he received a text message from his mother’s phone at 7:54 a.m. Sunday that indicated someone had her and was going to kill her. Her car was also missing.

A police report said Richard entered the emergency room at 6.p.m. but gave no other details.
