Man charged after stabbing at Walmart

A Youngstown man charged with felonious assault and tampering with evidence after a stabbing incident outside of Walmart was arraigned Tuesday in Boardman court.

Darrell Peterman, 51, of Brookline Avenue is in the Mahoning County jail. His preliminary hearing on the charges is set for 10:30 a.m. Jan. 14.

Boardman police arrested Peterman after a Salem man was stabbed outside of Walmart on Saturday.

Police were called to the store at 7:30 p.m. When police arrived they ordered the victim to the ground. He had a stab wound to his left shoulder and had a pistol on him. He told police he was a valid carry conceal weapon permit holder.

He explained he saw a vehicle parked illegally between handicap spots and said to his wife, “I guess people cannot park legally anymore.”

The 50-year-old man told police as he said this, the driver of the vehicle came out of the store and heard what he said. The driver, identified as Peterman, began to argue with the victim.

The victim said Peterman ran at him so he sprayed Peterman with pepper spray. Then he backed away when he realized Peterman had a knife, but Peterman still stabbed him in the shoulder and back, according to a police report.

The victim pulled his gun out and Peterman ran into Walmart with the knife, according to police.

The victim then called 911.

He was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Health Center downtown. Police detained Peterman outside of Walmart.

Peterman told police the man called him a derogatory name and argued with him over the parking spot. Then, he said, the man threatened him with a knife, so Peterman disarmed him and then ran to get away. He told police he did not stab the victim.

Police located the knife in layaway department. Surveillance video showed the two arguing in the parking lot. A video from a witness’ cellphone of the incident was also obtained by police. The video showed Peterman stabbing the victim after he sprayed him with pepper spray, according to police.

The victim’s injuries are non-life threatening.
