EMERGENCY SHELTER PROGRAM

The Cold Weather Emergency Shelter program began Sunday and runs through March 31, 2014.

The Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley reported that on Sunday and Monday, 20 percent more people sought shelter than when the program started in 2012.

Rescue Mission statistics are based on the number of bed stays; some people stay more than one time. Individuals and/or families are counted each night they arrive at the shelter.

2012 statistics

Bed stays: 5,829, a 16 percent decrease from 2011.

Children bed stays: 68

Women bed stays: 134
