School psychology scholarship established

Columbiana resident Frank O’Block met with Youngstown State University school psychology program faculty members and the YSU Foundation and made a $50,000 donation, establishing the Dr. Frank R. O’Block School Psychology Scholarship.

The scholarship will help support graduate school candidates in school psychology for many years.

O’Block attended Youngstown College with financial assistance through the G.I. Bill.

He graduated from Youngstown College in 1959 with a bachelor of science in education degree in math.

He earned his master’s degree in school psychology from Bowling Green State University in 1964.

As part of his training, he completed a one-year school psychology internship with the Youngstown City Schools.

O’Block earned his doctorate degree in education in educational psychology from the University of Illinois in 1967.

He served as a faculty member in the psychology, school psychology and counseling programs at Chicago State University for 37 years.

O’Block served as a licensed psychologist with fellow status in forensic psychology and as a school psychologist.

He was employed by the Elim Christian School and the United Cerebral Palsy Center in Illinois.

The YSU School Psychology Program offers two graduate degrees: a master’s of education in intervention services and an educational specialist degree in school psychology.

The program is housed in the Department of Counseling, Special Education and School Psychology and the Beeghly College of Education.

School psychologists are employed to team with educators, parent, and other professionals to create supportive learning environments for all students.
