Truck and Tractor Pull set for Saturday
Truck and Tractor Pull set for Saturday
Tickets still are available for the Canfield Fair Championship Truck and Tractor Pull, which begins at 7 tonight at the Grandstand.
The National Tractor Pullers Association, which is the oldest sanctioning body in the sport of pulling, again will join with USA-EAST Sled Pulling Inc. to co-sanction the pull.
Pulling classes will be contested on two side-by-side tracks using weight-transfer machines. The Canfield Fair’s pulling event annually draws about 12,000 fans.
The fair’s box office will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and tickets can also be purchased online by visiting the Canfield Fair’s website, www.canfieldfair.com.
Attractions include derby, racing
Grandstand attractions for this morning include the Draft Pony Pig Iron Derby from 8 to 11 a.m., which will be followed by Harness Racing at noon.
A free seminar on how to read a race program, as well as wagering, will be offered trackside at 11:30 a.m.
Attendance again falls short Thursday
Thursday’s attendance at the Canfield Fair was 36,243, which is about 7 percent less than last year’s Thursday attendance of 38,813, according to fair officials.
Opening-day attendance, too, dropped, from 25,699 last year to 17,695 this year.
Free activities offered near milking parlor
Fairgoers can milk a cow by hand, with a bit of help from volunteers, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Sunday and Monday, at a tent near the Canfield Fair’s milking parlor. The milking parlor operates at 5 a.m. and at 5 p.m. daily.
In a nearby tent, fairgoers can watch a video depicting the birth of a calf, which runs continuously throughout the day.
Mahoning sheriff welcomed by fair board
Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene was honored during Friday’s noon meeting of the Canfield Fair’s board of directors.
Greene said he’d like the sheriff’s office to be looked at as a resource, and one that is willing to do anything it can to help.
He added that the sheriff’s booth, located underneath the grandstand, has been updated in an attempt to “get the message out of what the office actually provides for the community,” and encouraged fairgoers to visit.
Smartphone photo contest debuts
For the first time this year, the Canfield Fair is offering a smartphone photo contest. Photos entered can be of any subject matter at the Canfield Fairgrounds, but must be taken between the official start of the fair and the entry deadline, which is 8 p.m. today.
Only one photo can be entered per person, and all photos need to be created from start to finish on a smartphone. The contest is open to anyone age 5 or older.
For more information about the contest, visit the Fine Arts Building.
Cookbook offers award-winning recipes
A spiral-bound cookbook filled with recipes from last year’s ribbon winners and friends is available to purchase for $10 in the Arts and Crafts Building.
For information about next year’s contests, or to obtain a 2014 Arts and Crafts Premium Book, contact the fair’s office beginning in March at 330-533-4107.
