The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County invited teens in grades 7-12 to party like a downworlder at the Pandemonium Party Aug. 16 at the Poland library.
The party was inspired by the “Mortal Instruments,” a series of young adult fantasy novels by Cassandra Clare.
Janet Loew, public relations director for the library explained the purpose of the party.
“Because teens are interested in movies, TeenXTreme librarians plan these parties around movies that are based on popular young adult books and book series,” said Loew. “The underlying message is always, ‘read!’”
Teens participated in a variety of crafts and games and even heard music from a live disc jockey. They even received a surprise visit from the TeenXTreme Green Man.
Josephine Nolfi, manager of youth services and programming at the library, explained what the green man was.
“The Green Man debuted a program where teens can text the library to be entered into a chance to win an iPad,” said Nolfi.
Attendees came dressed in costumes representing various characters from the “City of Bones” book. Delaney Baber was the winner of the contest and received “The Moral Instruments: City of Bones.”
Nolfi said the library wants to reach the teens.
“We’re trying to reach out to the teens where they are,” said Nolfi. “We’re doing all we can to keep up with the way kids relate to the library, and making it easier for them.”
Teens left the party with passes for the upcoming movie, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.”
