A Youngstown man in a traffic stop fled police into heavy traffic on McCartney Road before hitting the city’s canine cruiser, police said.

Devin Thompson, 20, of Duncan Lane, is charged with reckless operation, driving with a suspended license, fleeing and eluding, carrying a concealed weapon, receiving stolen property, drug possession, and having an obstruction hanging from his rearview mirror.

His arraignment was set for this morning in Campbell Municipal Court.

Police said they tried to stop Thompson at 8:08 p.m. Tuesday on Gladstone Street because he had air fresheners hanging from his rearview mirror.

Thompson accelerated and drove through side streets into the traffic on McCartney, a police report says.

He turned off McCartney and fled down several streets, eventually ending up on Clinton Street, the report says.

There, he hit the canine cruiser as that officer tried to stop him.

Backup officers arrived and ran to Thompson’s car as he was reaching under the driver’s seat, police said. They would later find a loaded gun there, the report says.

Police pulled him through the broken driver’s side window and struggled with him until they were able to handcuff him.

Nearly $3,000 fell out of his pocket, and police found suspected marijuana in the car, the report says.

The gun was stolen, police added.
