Join a loose knit group
All hands helping to “Warm Up America” are welcome on Sept. 6 and 20 from 10 a.m. until noon. Both experienced and anyone wanting to learn to knit or crochet can join.

Children’s nature hour set
Children’s Nature Hour: Busy Beavers will be Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. Children ages 3-6 are invited to join us to learn about the world’s largest and busiest rodent — the beaver. Participants to meet on Smythe Island in Newport Wetlands for a story, craft and to look for beaver.
Pre-registration/payment required at Ford Nature Center. Cost is $2 for residents and $3 for non-residents.
Hear tales for toddlers
Tales for Toddlers: Skunks will be Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. Toddlers will learn about nature’s little stinkers—the skunk. Join Mill Creek Park for fun activities and storytelling.

Farm tours available
Take a tractor-wagon ride through the MetroParks Farm every Sunday in September. Children can make a craft to take home. Visit the gift shop for closeout values. Suggested donations is $2/person or $5/family.
Take a family tour
The Metro Parks will offer a few more family tours Sept. 5 and 12 from 10-11:30 a.m. Tour includes a wagon ride, a visit with the animals, and playroom time. Limited seating, reservations are suggested.
Audubon Society to host Judy Semroc
Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley has invited the public to “Birds, Bugs and Botany” Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. Judy Semroc, from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will speak about where to look for birds based on their food preferences. The event will be at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on Route 46 in Canfield. All are welcome. For more information, call 1-888-846-8851.
MCCTC to have demonstrations
The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will once again host a series of hands-on demonstrations at this year’s Canfield Fair offering fair goers the chance to learn new skills and meet with MCCTC instructors.
New to the schedule this year, the Adult Career Center at MCCTC will host two evening sessions from 7-8 p.m. to teach those in attendance about storing data on a cloud, connecting to WiFi, apps and much more. In addition, visitors will receive a voucher to take a free iPad training course at the MCCTC.
Fair goers are invited to stop by the Education Building each day of the fair. All demonstrations are hosted in the Education Building from 1-3 p.m., unless otherwise noted.

Historical society hosts open house
The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is hosting a free Founders Day open house at the Arms Family Museum on Sept. 15 from 1-5 p.m., in celebration of the Society’s 138th anniversary. The museum will be open for tours, the education staff will have indoor and outdoor games and activities for all ages and executive director Bill Lawson will lead a historic walking tour of Wick Avenue at 1:30 p.m.

Spaghetti dinner to benefit charity
There will be a homemade Spaghetti Dinner and Chinese Auction at the Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road (Rt. 62) in Canfield Sept. 14 from 4-6:30 p.m. The dinner is sponsored by the YSU Chapter of Habitat for Humanity and the Western Reserve UMC Mission Committee and will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning County. Since its organization, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 20 homes in Mahoning County. It builds safe, decent and affordable housing for God’s people in need. All funds raised will be used locally. Ticket prices are $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-12 and children under five are free. Takeout is available. Libraries close for holiday
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed Sept. 1 and 2.
Swap coupons at the library
If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop by the Canfield library at 9 a.m. Sept. 13 and 14 to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons or learning new tips from other coupon-clippers.
Check your blood pressure
Get your blood pressure checked at the Canfield library Sept. 17 from 1-3 p.m. This event will be hosted by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association.
Kindle class set in Septmeber

Enter contest to have dinner with author
Want to have dinner with New York Times bestselling young adult author Jay Asher? Give the library some reasons - 13 reasons, to be exact. Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading at the Canfield library Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion and are registered Delta society therapy dogs.
Lego my library on Tuesday
Children, age 6 and up, can create Lego designs at the Canfield library Sept. 10 from 6-8 p.m. Legos will be provided.
Gotta move storytime set
Children ages 2-5, accompanied by a caregiver, can join the Canfield library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.
Congratulate top readers
The Canfield library will congratulate the summer’s top readers Sept. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. This event is for school-age children.

Farmers National Bank funds scholarship
Farmers National Bank reaffirmed its simultaneous commitment to community and education with a $3,000 gift to the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC).
OFIC applied these funds to a scholarship for Ryan Pollifrone of Boardman. Pollifrone is a finance and political science major at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus.
Farmers has provided annual donations to the OFIC over the last 8 years. The OFIC, which is headquartered in Columbus, works with corporations, foundations and individuals to provide scholarship assistance to 100,000 students.
Singers invited to worship
Singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 a.m. Canfield Fair Ecumenical Worship Service Sept. 1 at the Canfield Fair.
A choir warm-up and rehearsal will begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service.
Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, assisted by accompanist Adrienne Lesnett.
Chicken dinner to be Sept. 5
Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road, will have a drive through chicken dinner from 4 p.m. until it is sold out Sept. 5. The cost is $7. Included in the meal are stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.
Volleyball boosters to host wine taste
The Canfield Volleyball Booster Club will host a wine taste and Chinese auction Sept. 21 at St. Michael’s Family Life Center from 7-10 p.m.

Fall festival set
Poland-Boardman Child Care Center, located at 1940 Boardman Poland Road, is hosting the second annual fall festival Sept. 21 from 1-5 p.m.
The festival will include food, games, a bounce-around, crafts, fire trucks and the MedEvac helicopter.
First Night Youngstown seeks event staffers
First Night Youngstown is seeking event staffers to handle duties at venues on Dec. 31. Event staff will receive a small monetary stipend. A mandatory training will be in November. Shift start times will vary depending on the venue, but none will end later than 10 p.m., giving staff an opportunity to enjoy the remaining festivities and the fireworks.

Library committee reviewed proposals
The Building and Sites Committee of the Board of Trustees, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, met Aug. 8 to review proposals from 10 architectural firms for the new Canfield Library project.
No vote was taken today and the process will continue with a Building and Sites Committee meeting at 1 p.m. on Aug. 13 at the Austintown Library.
After the Building and Sites Committee has made a selection, this committee will submit its recommendation to the full Board of Trustees, which will make the final selection.
Join wellness challenge
The OSU Extension will present the “Live Healthy Live Well” fall wellness challenge Sept. 9 through Oct. 20. Any adult with an email account can participate.
The purpose is to improve overall health and well-being. Included in the program is twice weekly educational messages, tracking log for progress, Facebook account for group interaction, weekly drawings from participants for wellness and fitness prizes.

Support group meeting to be Sept. 18
The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will resume its monthly meetings on Sept. 18 by welcoming Dr Noah Erikson, Chiropractor. Dr Erikson believes in integrating traditional medical models to include complementary and alternative medicines and to treat each case individually.
The meeting is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman. All are welcome.
Comedy show set
Raise the Woof, a stand up comedy show, will be Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. at Magic Tree Pub and Eatery. Tickets are $20 and proceeds benefit For the Dogs, a non-profit organization. The event will include an appetizer buffet, basket raffle and a 50/50.

Donate food items
Canfield Operation Blessing distributes food at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. every third Thursday of the month. In order to continue to help local families in need, the church is asking for donations of non-perishable goods at the following locations during the month of August: Canfield Police Department, Canfield Fire Department, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, The Broad Street Diner, Bob and Chuck Eddy Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Fiat and Firm Fitness and Spray Tan (Hilltop Plaza). Arms Museum plans Christmas program
Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display.
Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.
The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
