State commendation

State commendation

Brian Daley, the Ohio Secretary of State’s regional liaison, presented the fair’s board of directors with a commendation from Jon Husted at the board’s noon meeting Wednesday.

Daley said the commendation is simply a “small token of gratitude for the work of the Mahoning County Agricultural Society,” which has, for more than a century and a half, brought the Canfield Fair to the community.

“May their good and honorable work continue,” Daley said, reading from the commendation. “And may it inspire those that follow.”

The Canfield Fair does a great deal to promote agriculture, community, youth education and economic development, Daley added.

MCCTC offers demonstrations

At this year’s Canfield Fair, the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will again offer a series of hands-on demonstrations in the Education Building, giving fairgoers the opportunity to learn new skills and meet with instructors.

The MCCTC will host an exercise-science demonstration from 1 to 3 p.m. today followed by an evening session, from 7 to 8 p.m., about storing data on a cloud, connecting to Wi-Fi, and using apps. Attendees of the evening session will receive a voucher for a free iPad training course at the center.

In addition, a precision machining/manufacturing session will be offered Friday, a cosmetology session Saturday, and an engineering session Sunday. All will be from 1 to 3 p.m.

For information, contact Jacqueline Kuffel, career development supervisor, at 330-729-4120.

Livestock sale

Individuals, along with companies and organizations, can purchase livestock during the Canfield Fair Livestock Auction/Sale today and Friday to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

Donations will be distributed to hungry families in Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull counties, after their processing by Chamberlain Farms and Lehman’s Poultry.

Market goats will be sold at 5:30 p.m. today, followed by market lambs, carcass lambs and market hogs at 6:30 p.m.

Market poultry, including broilers and turkeys, as well as goat milk fudge and market rabbits will be sold at 5:30 p.m., while market beef and market feeders will be sold at 7 p.m.

All auctions/sales will be in Building 8.

Processing fees will be added to the purchase price, and MasterCard, Visa, personal check and cash will be accepted. All donations are tax deductible.

Peace project

This year, all fairgoers are invited to put their fingerprints on a large banner for the Global Art Project for Peace in the Fine Arts Building. The banner will be a part of an international art exchange in April.

Phantoms jerseys

The Youngstown Phantoms will unveil their new jerseys at the 21 WFMJ-TV tent by the Grandstand at 5 p.m. today. The station is sponsoring the event. Phantoms season ticket-holders who have purchased four or more tickets or club tickets will be able to pick up a free jersey after the unveiling until 7 p.m.
