Two houses burn

youngstown

City firefighters battled two arsons late Sunday and early Monday.

Crews were called to a 211 E. Philadelphia Ave. home on the South Side about 11:40 p.m. Sunday, where the residents told them they were watching television on the second floor when someone smelled smoke, and when they went to check, they discovered a fire on the porch.

The three people inside jumped out a second-story window, and crews failed to get inside on their initial attempt, reports said. A ladder truck had to be called to knock the flames down from above. The occupants of the home said it was firebombed. Damage is listed at just under $20,000, a total loss. One firefighter was slightly injured.

About 1:25 a.m. Monday, fire destroyed a vacant house at 2315 Gaither Ave. Damage there is listed at $7,000. No one was injured.

Police charged a 16-year-old with drug trafficking after an early morning traffic stop.

Police stopped the car about 1 a.m. Sunday after the driver, Andre K. Williams, 19, of Wirt Street, Youngstown, failed to signal for a turn at state Route 193 and Liberty Street, a police report says.

Another juvenile, 17, was in the car. Both juveniles are from Youngstown.

Police charged the 16-year-old after finding the bags of marijuana, the report says.

The 17-year-old was charged with marijuana possession and carrying brass knuckles.

Williams was charged with complicity to trafficking and contributing to the unruliness of the juveniles, police said.

Arrest in shooting

CAMPBELL

Police arrested Teon Stennis, 20, on Monday in connection with last week’s shooting near the Michael J. Kirwan Homes that wounded a 19-year-old Youngstown man.

Stennis is charged with felonious assault in connection with the shooting of Kewann Skinner of East Auburndale Avenue. He was shot once in the buttocks and twice in the leg on the evening of Aug. 18 in front of 94 Jean St.

Just a few days later, Skinner picked Stennis out of a photo lineup, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Sgt. Drew Rauzan, interim chief, said he appreciates the hard work of the department’s detective division. “The city is a safer place now that he is off our streets.”

Stennis, who was charged in 2011 with drug trafficking, will be held in the Campbell jail until his initial appearance in Campbell Municipal Court at 9 a.m. today.
