The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center is offering a free community program, “Tender Touch for Tender People,” from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 9 at the center, on Park Avenue west of St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Gina DeAngelo, owner of the Massage Cafe in Canfield, will discuss safe massage and relaxation techniques for people recovering from cancer or other illness or who are in the last stage of life.

Immunization award

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio Department of Health has presented the Youngstown Community Health Center, 726 Wick Ave., with an Immunization Coverage Improvement Award for achieving significant improvement of 38 percent in immunization coverage rates for children by age 24 months.

The Youngstown Community Health Center, a part of One Health Ohio, provides medical, dental and behavioral health services to residents of the Mahoning Valley.

Patient-Centered certification awarded

The Humility of Mary Health Partners Physician Associates practice, the Austintown Family Health Center, has been certified as a Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

A medical home practice is the patient’s “home-base” for health and wellness. Working with the staff, doctors lead and coordinate a patient’s overall care. For patients, having a medical home means better access to their doctor. A PCMH practice offers extended hours and same-day appointments to make it easier for patients to get the health care they need, when they need it, said Nancy Lesniewski, manager of the health center.

The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians installed Dr. Jon Seager, Hartville, as its 2013-14 president effective Aug. 10.

Other officers installed at the organization’s annual dinner are: president-elect, Dr. Suellywn Stewart, Westerville; vice president, Dr. Thomas Houston, Dublin; treasurer, Dr. Donald Mack, Columbus; speaker, Dr. Ryan Kauffman, Bellefontaine; and vice speaker, Dr. Stanley Anderson, North Canton.

The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians’ immediate past president is Dr. Ratna Palakodeti, Beavercreek.

Prostate screening

Free prostate cancer screenings are offered from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Grace AME Church, 1137 Main Ave. SW. Digital rectal exams will be performed by physicians, and prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood draws will be performed by Humility of Mary Health Partners lab personnel.
