Convicted coach seeks new trial

YOUNGSTOWN — A former chiropractor and gymnastics coach who is serving multiple sentences after being convicted of sex charges had a hearing this morning to ask for a new trial in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Judge R. Scott Krichbaum heard the request of Gregory Dew and his legal team for the new trial.

Dew was accused of molesting gymnasts he coached from 1990-92. He filed motions asking for a new trial claiming irregularities in the jury selection process, that audio and video evidence was tampered with and that jury instructions were improperly given.

Judge Krichbaum overruled most of the motions, saying they should have been raised on direct appeal.

He did not make a final decision pending the submission of briefs on the jury instruction claim.
