Campbell police arrest driver on multiple charges

At about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police stopped an SUV speeding on Gladstone Street, then arrested its driver — who attempted to walk away from the running car when pulled over — on charges of endangering children, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, driving under suspension, obstructing official business, resisting arrest, and speeding.

When the driver, identified as 42-year-old Robert A. Douglas of Youngstown, tried to flee the scene, police ordered him to stop — a request to which Douglas responded with a profanity-filled tirade, despite having a Taser drawn on him.

Douglas continued to resist arrest, tensing up, yelling and pulling away from the officers who were trying to handcuff him.

When police finally placed the handcuffed Douglas into the police car, they found a 3-year-old in the rear seat of the SUV, along with 2 grams of suspected marijuana. The child was placed in the custody of his aunt.

At the Campbell City Jail, Douglas complained that his handcuffs were too tight. He also kicked and punched the walls of the jail, screaming that he had a heart condition and wanted medical attention.

Police tried to bring Douglas to the Mahoning County Justice Center, where he could await his court appearance on Tuesday, but the MCJC denied the request, due to Douglas’ claims of needing medical attention.

Douglas was released on criminal summons and transported back to his residence.
