Rob Rassey, a Youngstown Phantoms assistant coach for the past two seasons, is leaving the USHL team to become an assistant at Harvard University.

A native of Shelby Township, Mich., Rassey was a Mahoning Valley Phantom player from 2003-05, then played for Northeastern University in Boston. He was named a Hockey East Distinguished Scholar in 2009.

Rassey joined the Youngstown Phantoms staff in August 2011 after Anthony Noreen was promoted to head coach.

Cavanaugh earns Horizon honor

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State senior volley ball player Jenna Cavanaugh is the Horizon League’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Her classmate Missy Hundelt is a preseason all-league honoree, according to a poll of the league’s coaches.

Cavanaugh led the conference with 1.23 blocks per set last season, which was also the sixth-best average in school history. She finished with 115 block assists, which tied for the second-most in school history.

Hundelt was predicted to repeat as an all-league player after ranking fourth in the conference in kills per set with 3.42 per set in 2012.

McDonald Baseball meeting is Sept. 1

The McDonald Baseball Association will meet on Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. at the Community Room in the U.S. Post Office building.

Cardinals win AA league

WARREN

The Cardinals won the Warren AA Baseball league championship series on Thursday, defeating Metro Ice, 10-2, to clinch a 3-1 series victory.

Ice won Game 1, 5-1, while the Cardinals won Game 2, 8-0. It is the second straight season the Cardinals (32-8) won the league championship.

Players are Andrew Beachy, Kyle Borton, Darrell Brammer, Marty Brinker, Joe Canan, Joe Collins, Dan Costello, Ricky DiMuzio, Josh Gore, Nick Harper, Joe Koch, Tony Koch, Jeremy Krol, Tommy Marlowe, Dave Piersante, Raul Pizzaro, Mike Rohan, Kyle Watson, Mike Watson and Steve Wilaj.

Coaches are Frank Costello, Rick DiMuzio and Ralph Testa.

Tony Koch won the LCS MVP.

Troxil selected for showcase

CANFIELD

Canfield High softball player Kayla Troxil has been selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase South that will be Friday and next Saturday at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, S.C.

The event is part of the Queen of Diamond’s Showcase events which are the largest fastpitch softball showcases in the U.S. Two-hundred-seventy players were invited from 1,500 applicants.

Troxil was a pitcher and outfielder for the Canfield 13-14-year-old softball team that finished third last week at the Junior League World Series in Kirkland, Wash.

Troxil also pitches for the Thunder Elite 16U Fastpitch Softball Travel Team.

Springfield falls to St. Thomas Aquinas

LOUISVILLE

The Springfield High volleyball team fell to St. Thomas Aquinas by scores of 25-22, 25-13 and 25-19.

Morgan Buchenic scored six points and made six kills for the Tigers (1-1). Elizabeth Thompson scored five points while Quinn Crowe contributed four kills and two blocks.

Jets activate WR Holmes

NEW YORK

Santonio Holmes’ comeback appears closer than it did just a few days ago.

The veteran wide receiver was moved to the New York Jets’ active roster from the physically unable to perform list on Friday night, a promising sign that he could be ready for the start of the regular season.
