Man shot in thigh
YOUNGSTOWN
Harold W. Michaels, 39, was shot in the thigh about 2:20 a.m. Friday in front of a home in the 300 block of West Chalmers Avenue.
Michaels told police he was standing in front of the home when a black Chevrolet Cavalier drove past and someone inside fired two shots, one of which hit him. Michaels told police he had been in an argument with two men a couple of hours before at a nearby store on Market Street.
Other than a blood stain in the street, officers could find no other evidence.
Volunteer training

The Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County, 1218 W. State St., will host a volunteer-information session with coffee, cookies and discussion from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 10. The volunteer-training kickoff meeting will provide guests with information about the requirements necessary to become a shelter volunteer, whether it will be interacting with clients and their children or volunteering in the administrative office.
The volunteer-training program will continue from 6 to 9 p.m. each Tuesday from Sept. 17 through Dec. 10. Participants will learn about the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault, safety planning, empowerment counseling, confidentiality and other topics.

Charged in death
NEW CASTLE, PA.
Michael J. Burrelli, 28, charged with criminal homicide in the shooting death of his father early Thursday after an argument over cellphone usage, is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Lawrence County Central Court in New Castle.
Killed was Charles D. Burrelli, 52, who was found dead at 2 a.m. Thursday in a warehouse at 1714 Kosciusko Way at West State Street in Union Township, Pa.
Michael, arrested at the scene about 5 a.m. by Pennsylvania State Police, was arraigned Thursday afternoon and placed in Lawrence County Jail without bond. He also is charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with or fabricating evidence.
According to court records, Michael fired seven shots at his father with a 9 mm Beretta pistol, killing him; placed his father’s body in a metal bin intending to dispose of it in Moraine State Park; used bleach to clean up the blood at the scene, and concealed the spent bullet casings.

A city fire lieutenant was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Health Center after he collapsed at a fire about 5:25 a.m. Friday at 326 E. Judson Ave. on the South Side.
Crews arriving to the vacant home found fire coming from the side of the first floor and were able to get inside and halt the flames before they made it to the second floor.
A witness told firefighters they saw a man with a backpack walking out of the house just before the fire started. The cause is listed as arson, and damage is listed at $6,000. Lt. Stewart Bissell was treated for exhaustion at the hospital and released, fire Chief John O’Neill said.
