The Boardman Boys Cross Country team successfully opened the 2013 season with a second place finish out of 24 schools at The OHSAA Pre-Season Invitational- Division I on Aug. 17.

The Spartans placed five of the top 45 runners in a field of 223.

Senior Mark Hadley took first at a time of 15:34, while classmate Alan Burns was sixth overall with a time of 16:37.

They were followed by sophomore Nathan Hadley, who placed 16th with a time of 16:58, senior Justin Maroni in 21st place at 17:09, and senior Jacob Kelleck was 45th with a time of 17:42.

“Great way to start our season,” said Spartan head coach John Phillips. “Getting to compete at the state course is a plus and the results were a nice bonus.”

Junior Juan Santiago placed 70th in a time of 18:12, junior Nick Long was 87th in a time of 18:28, and senior Trevor Leyden was 99th in a time of 18:41.

Rounding the 10 Spartan runners were freshman Nathaniel Ams in 152nd at 19:51 and sophomore Ethan Schwendeman in 172nd at 20:25.

“We have a tremendous opportunity to have a very special season in 2013,” said Phillips. “We need to stay healthy, work hard and improve each and every day and we should be in the mix come November-our goal is to be back here as a team on Nov. 2.”
