Outback Ray visited the Poland library July 31 and brought some exotic friends along for the ride. The program, “Dig This with Outback Ray,” was part of the library’s summer reading program and provided children of all ages with insight into the world of some unfamiliar animals.
“Dig This” showcased a variety of captive-born animals. Outback Ray described what captive-born animals were to the audience.
“They are animals that didn’t come from the wild or the woods, they were all born in someone’s house,” said Outback Ray. “Ever since they were babies they have been around kids and people.”
Outback Ray introduced the room of children and adults to Ziggy, a blue-tongued skink.
“He eats fruits and vegetables, and his favorite food is strawberries,” said Outback Ray.
Along with Ziggy, the audience met a chinchilla, a lionhead rabbit, a milk snake, a red-footed tortoise, a hissing cockroach and a Virginia opossum named Stitch.
“You know what’s so cool about ‘possums? He’s a marsupial just like a kangaroo,” said Outback Ray. “These ‘possums can carry up to 13 babies in their pouch.”
