Mubarak put under house arrest
CAIRO
Wearing a white T-shirt and flashing a smile, Hosni Mubarak was transferred from prison Thursday to a Nile-side military hospital where he will be under house arrest, a reversal of fortune for the former president who was ousted by a popular uprising and is on trial for complicity in the killing of protesters in 2011.
The release of the 85-year-old Mubarak comes amid a sweeping crackdown against the Muslim Brotherhood, which rose to power after the revolution only to see their Islamist president toppled by a military coup last month.
The release threatened to stoke tensions in the deeply divided country, reeling from violence and the unsettled politics that followed the military coup against Mohammed Morsi.
School worker averted tragedy
DECATUR, Ga.
The 911 tapes from a frightening standoff and shooting at an Atlanta-area school show how a school employee’s calm demeanor and kind approach helped end the ordeal without any injuries.
Police said Wednesday that school bookkeeper Antoinette Tuff was heroic in how she responded after being taken hostage a day earlier by Michael Brandon Hill, a 20-year-old man with a history of mental-health issues. Hill went to the school armed with an AK 47-style rifle and nearly 500 rounds of ammunition, police said.
No one was injured, but police said the suspect shot into the floor and exchanged gunfire with officers who had surrounded Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, a suburb east of Atlanta. The school has 870 students in prekindergarten through fifth grade.
Man revives after death declaration
WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio
Southwest Ohio doctors say they’re stunned by a man who revived 45 minutes after his heart stopped beating and he was declared dead.
Doctors say presumed-dead diesel mechanic Tony Yahle was being prepared by nurses to be seen by his family when he began to show signs of life. They say he fully awoke at the hospital five days later.
The 37-year-old West Carrollton resident’s cardiologist, Dr. Raja Nazir, says he’s been a topic of discussion among doctors.
Deal with mayor of San Diego hits snag
SAN DIEGO
A deal aimed at resolving the sexual-harassment scandal involving Bob Filner hit a snag Thursday when the attorney suing the mayor over such allegations said she was not party to the tentative agreement between city officials and Filner.
Details of the proposal that ended three days of talks Wednesday haven’t been disclosed, but city council members have said in the past the mayor needed to agree to quit for any deal to be struck.
City council OKs NYPD watchdog
NEW YORK
The nation’s biggest police department will get a new watchdog and face easier standards for people to file profiling lawsuits against it after the city council Thursday overrode mayoral vetoes amid applause from supporters and angry warnings from opponents.
The measures mark the most-aggressive legislative effort in years to put new checks on the New York Police Department, and the vote came less than two weeks after a federal judge imposed new oversight of her own.
