Dad found dead

NEW CASTLE, PA.

A 28-year-old New Castle man, Michael J. Burrelli, accused of killing his father, is in jail after being arraigned Thursday . He is charged with criminal homicide, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence, according to WFMJ TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner. His father, Charles D. Burrelli, 52, was found dead at 2 a.m. Thursday at 1714 Kosciusko Way in Union Township. Township police received information of a possible homicide from an acquaintance of the suspect, according to the Pennsylvania State Police in Lawrence County. The county coroner’s office pronounced the victim dead at the scene. State police said the suspect fired several shots at his father, killing him, then tried to dispose of the body, according to WFMJ.

Five swords stolen

YOUNGSTOWN

Someone broke into a South Side home Wednesday night and took five swords. Police were called to the 200 block of Hilton Avenue at about 8:55 p.m. by a man who said he left his home at 7:45 p.m. and when he came back found a back door kicked open and the swords gone. At least three of the swords are Samurai swords, reports said. A neighbor told police she saw a chubby man running through the backyard carrying something bulky. The homeowner told police the swords are valued at $5,000.

Bridge work is set

New Castle, Pa.

Steel-beam erection on the Mill Street Bridge will begin Monday and continue through the week, weather permitting. Work will be done between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Large trucks will transport beams to the site and large cranes will be staged adjacent to the bridge. Traffic will be maintained through the work area, but expect minor delays.

Benefit for Marissa

NILES

High Pointe Restaurant in Niles will host a benefit dinner for a Boardman girl with a rare form of cancer from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Marissa Salus, 13, is battling chordomam, and has had two surgeries to remove a tumor from the base of her skull and spine. The benefit is to help with her medical expenses. The event also will have two auctions and a 50/50 raffle.
