Chicken dinner to be Sept. 5

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road, will have a drive through chicken dinner from 4 p.m. until it is sold out Sept. 5.

The cost is $7. Included in the meal are stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Volleyball boosters to host wine taste

The Canfield Volleyball Booster Club will host a wine taste and Chinese auction Sept. 21 at St. Michael’s Family Life Center from 7-10 p.m.

First Night Youngstown seeks event staffers

First Night Youngstown is seeking event staffers to handle duties at venues on Dec. 31. Event staff will receive a small monetary stipend.

A mandatory training will be in November. Shift start times will vary depending on the venue, but none will end later than 10 p.m., giving staff an opportunity to enjoy the remaining festivities and the fireworks.

Fall festival set

Poland-Boardman Child Care Center, located at 1940 Boardman Poland Road, is hosting the second annual fall festival Sept. 21 from 1-5 p.m.

The festival will include food, games, a bounce-around, crafts, fire trucks and the MedEvac helicopter.

Easter Seals benefit set for today

The Easter Seals Car and Truck Show, organized by South Range Senior Justin Sikora, will be Aug. 24 from noon until 5 p.m. at South Range High School, located at 11300 Canfield-Columbiana Road in Canfield.

The event will include food, entertainment for the kids, a 50/50 raffle, Chinese auction, cars and trucks and the Easter Seals Penny the pig. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. All proceeds will benefit the Easter Seals programs and services for children and adults with disabilities and special needs.

Library committee reviewed proposals

The Building and Sites Committee of the Board of Trustees, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, met Aug. 8 to review proposals from 10 architectural firms for the new Canfield Library project.

No vote was taken today and the process will continue with a Building and Sites Committee meeting at 1 p.m. on Aug. 13 at the Austintown Library.

After the Building and Sites Committee has made a selection, this committee will submit its recommendation to the full Board of Trustees, which will make the final selection.

Join wellness challenge

The OSU Extension will present the “Live Healthy Live Well” fall wellness challenge Sept. 9 through Oct. 20. Any adult with an email account can participate.

The purpose is to improve overall health and well-being. Included in the program is twice weekly educational messages, tracking log for progress, Facebook account for group interaction, weekly drawings from participants for wellness and fitness prizes.

Support group meeting to be Sept. 18

The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will resume its monthly meetings on Sept. 18 by welcoming Dr Noah Erikson, Chiropractor. Dr Erikson believes in integrating traditional medical models to include complementary and alternative medicines and to treat each case individually.

The meeting is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman. All are welcome.

Comedy show set

Raise the Woof, a stand up comedy show, will be Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. at Magic Tree Pub and Eatery. Tickets are $20 and proceeds benefit For the Dogs, a non-profit organization. The event will include an appetizer buffet, basket raffle and a 50/50.

Finish the Fight Festival

Finish the Fight Festival, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, will be Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Austintown Township Park, 6000 Kirk Road. The event is A fun way to join with others in the community in the fight against cancer and to raise funds for the activities of the American Cancer Society.

Donate food items

Canfield Operation Blessing distributes food at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. every third Thursday of the month. In order to continue to help local families in need, the church is asking for donations of non-perishable goods at the following locations during the month of August: Canfield Police Department, Canfield Fire Department, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, The Broad Street Diner, Bob and Chuck Eddy Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Fiat and Firm Fitness and Spray Tan (Hilltop Plaza). Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display.

Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.

Family garden Fridays set

The Metro Parks will host Family Garden Fridays every Friday now through September from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities will be centered on gardening with children.
