Jammers’ Myles also a big hit at Eastwood

In 2011, Bryson Myles roamed the outfield of Eastwood Field as a member of the Scrappers. He appeared in 50 games and finished with a .302 batting average.
Bryson is still in the Indians’ organization, and plays for Carolina. He is batting .278 with 46 RBI.
On Wednesday, Myles’ brother Candon was in left field at Eastwood Field, wearing a Jamestown Jammers uniform.
Like his brother before him, Candon found success in a Jammers’ 3-1 victory over the Scrappers in front of 2,544 fans.
Candon, batting in the Jammers’ lead-off spot, reached base four times. He stole a pair of bases, and scored the game’s first run.
Bryson was selected out of Stephen F. Austin State University in the sixth round of the 2011 draft. In the same draft, Candon was picked by the Pirates in the 12th round out of South Grand Prairie High School.
“It was a crazy time in our house,” Candon said of draft day. “Everybody was super excited when Bryson got picked. They were still celebrating when my name was called 20 minutes later. The whole house went crazy.
“We kind of expected Bryson to get picked. Me getting picked was a total surprise.”
Candon had been playing in the Gulf Coast League until earlier this month, when he was promoted to Jamestown.
Because both brothers have been playing simultaneously in different leagues, they have not been able to see each perform since early 2011.
“My mom made it to Carolina for three games, then came up and watched me play a few games,” Candon said. “However, me and Bryson, we talk every single day. He’s been here before, so I always turn to him for pointers.
Wednesday’s game was remarkably close, considering the poor play of the Scrappers. The Scrappers defense committed a pair of errors, while Scrappers pitchers threw a pair of wild pitches, hit a batter and issued six walks.
Scrappers batters struck out 13 times, including four in the sixth inning alone.
Jammers base runners stole six bases.
The Scrappers’ lone run came in the fourth inning when designated hitter Robel Garcia blasted a home run — his fifth of the year — to right field. Garcia posed at home plate for a lengthy time following the homer, and slowly trotted the bases. He struck out his final two at-bats, and was 1-for-4 on the night with three strikeouts.
The Scrappers (23-36) have now lost six straight, while the Jammers (37-23) sit atop the Pinkney Division with the best record in the New York-Penn League.
“We’ve been playing well, I’m glad that I can come here and contribute,” Myles said. “I hope I can continue to get on base and be productive.”
