Softball World Series team honored at event

The Canfield Baseball Club will honor the 13-14 softball team that finished third at last week’s Junior League World Series on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

The event at McCune Park also will salute CBC’s baseball teams that were district champions.

Tressel will teach coaching class at Akron

AKRON

It’s now Professor Tressel. Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel will teach a course this fall at the University of Akron, where he has worked in an administration role for the past two years. He will instruct students in “General Principles of Coaching” with former Zips coach Jim Dennison, who was Akron’s coach when Tressel began his coaching career at the school as an assistant in 1974.

“He gave me my first opportunity to coach,” Tressel said, “and he provided guidance that has lasted me a lifetime.”

The three-credit course, which will be held once a week and run into December, will be open to Akron students and the general public. Tressel became Akron’s vice president of strategic engagement in 2012. In a release from the school, Tressel is referred to as the school’s Vice President for Student Success.

YSU sets student ticket sale for Michigan State

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State Athletic Department will hold a one-day sale Monday for YSU students interested in purchasing tickets to the Penguins’ football game at Michigan State on Sept. 14 at Spartan Stadium.

The cost is $55 and YSU students must show a valid YSU student ID. Only one ticket is available per person. The ticket office will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information contact the YSU Athletic Ticket Office at 330-941-1978.

Warren Cardinals 2nd in Roy Hobbs event

WARREN

The Warren Cardinals finished in second place in the recent Roy Hobbs Tournament, losing to the Akron A’s.

The Cardinals were managed by Frank Costello with coaches Rick Dimuizo and Ralph Testa.

Team members included Dan Costello, Kyle Borton, Steve Wilaj, Mike Rohan, Tony Koch, Joe Koch, Darrell Brammer, Ricky Dimuizo, Jeremy Krol, Joe Collins, Marty Brinker, Josh Gore, Dave Piersante, Kyle Watson, Mike Watson, Andrew Beachy, Raul Pirazzo, Tommy Marlowe, Joey Canann and Nick Harper.

Sodeman, Murdick win Blaney Memorial races

Hartford

Jack Sodeman Jr. of North Jackson won the biggest race of his career Tuesday, holding off Caleb Griffith in the 410 Sprint Car race during the fifth annual Lou Blaney Memorial card at Sharon Speedway.

Sodeman, the last track champion when the Sprint Cars ran weekly at Sharon in 2010, overcame a smoking engine over the final five laps to win the 30-lap $5,000-to-win race. Dale Blaney finished ninth and Dave Blaney was 21st.

Also, Dave Murdick of Butler, Pa., won the 30-lap BRP Tour Governor Insurance Agency DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds feature. His third straight win on the circuit earned him $2,000.

Sharon Speedway will be back in action Saturday with another Steel Valley Thunder program featuring the Governor Insurance Agency DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods, and the Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks. Racing begins at 7 p.m.
