A Steel Street man was arrested on gun and drug charges after shots were fired in a South Side neighborhood Tuesday morning.

Larry Donnell Marrow Jr., 25, is in the Mahoning County jail on charges of discharging firearms, improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of heroin.

He is expected to be arraigned in Youngstown Municipal Court today.

Police were called to 2554 Hunter St. and the 2500 block of Cooper Street about 8:45 a.m. for reports of gunfire. As officers were on their way, they passed a car that was described as being involved in a shooting being pushed off the road and into a yard in the 900 block of Indianola Avenue, reports said.

A man later identified as Marrow was walking away from the car when police pulled up to it and officers found a bullet hole in the car, reports said. Police found three doses of heroin in the car on the floor near the driver’s seat and a loaded .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun on the floor in front of the passenger seat.

Also found inside the car was $528 in cash, reports said.

Reports said Marrow told officers he is unemployed and lives with his girlfriend, who owns the car he was driving. He said he bought the gun for $200 two weeks ago because he is afraid for his life. He said someone is after him and he admitted to firing two shots Tuesday morning.

Court records show that Marrow has only a single charge this year for having no driver’s license.
