Penguins name five football captains

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State football coach Eric Wolford announced Tuesday that quarterback Kurt Hess, wide receiver Jelani Berassa, center Chris Elkins, strong safety Donald D’Alesio and linebacker Dom Rich will serve as captains for the 2013 campaign.

With his selection, Hess, a senior from Dayton, became the first three-time team captain in the history of the program.

Another repeat captain is Rich, a senior linebacker from Canfield.

Elkins, a fourth-year offensive lineman from Beaver Falls, Pa., has started 26 straight games at guard and will be the Penguins’ starting center. Berassa, a fifth-year senior from Miami, has missed two of the past three seasons with season-ending knee injuries.

D’Alesio, a Youngstown native from Cardinal Mooney, started all 11 games a year ago at free safety and moved to strong safety this spring.

YSU is set to open the season Aug. 29 against Dayton. Kickoff at Stambaugh Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. and can be heard on WKBN-AM 570. Tickets are available by calling 330-941-1978.

YSU men’s schedule has 10 from postseason

Youngstown

Youngstown State men’s basketball coach Jerry Slocum announced Tuesday a 2013-14 schedule that features 10 teams that made the postseason last year and eight schools with 20-plus wins. Those postseason teams combined for an overall record of 219-124 and a winning percentage of .638 in 2012-13.

The schedule includes opponents from the ACC (Pittsburgh), Big East (St. John’s), Conference USA (Florida International), Atlantic-10 (Massachusetts), the Mid-American Conference (Kent State) and the Western Athletic Conference (UMKC).

“This is one of the most challenging schedules we have put together during my time at Youngstown State,” Slocum said. “Our non-league opponents are some of the most tradition-rich programs from the top conferences in the country, and playing high-quality teams will keep us focused heading into Horizon League.”

The complete YSU regular-season schedule appears elsewhere on this page.
