YSU tennis coach leaves for Illinois State
NORMAL, ILL.
Former Youngstown State men’s and women’s tennis coach Mark Klysner was hired as the men’s tennis coach at Illinois State. Klysner spent the last three seasons as YSU’s men’s tennis coach, while also serving as the women’s tennis coach for the past two years. The programs combined to win 28 matches last season, with the women winning 15 and the men 13.
Klysner guided the women’s team to its most dual wins in a season since 1998-99, while the men’s 13 victories were the most since 1990-91.
Penguins top Cal U. in soccer exhibition

Junior Chelsey Haney scored a goal and assisted on another and freshman Karlee Kline scored the game-winner Monday as the Youngstown State women’s soccer team defeated California (Pa.) Univeristy, 2-1, in an exhibition game consisting of three 30-minute periods.
Haney’s first goal tied the match. She gathered a center from Brittany Tenis and beat the goalkeeper with a strike into the lower left corner. Kline gave the Penguins the lead for good at the 11-minute mark of the second period after a cross by Haney found senior Rachel Morrison whose pass gave Kline an open angle to the lower right corner.
For the match, the Penguins took 20 shots, including 11 shots on goal. YSU opens the season Friday at 7 p.m. at Niagara.
Columbiana, Leetonia football alums to meet
LEETONIA
The annual alumni football game between Columbiana and Leetonia will be renewed once again after a decade of absence.
This full-pad, full-contact game between graduates of Leetonia High and Columbiana High is scheduled Saturday at Leetonia High School Stadium.
The game was traditionally held at the end of the high school regular season during the 1980s and ’90s. It has not been played in approximately 10 years because of either Columbiana or Leetonia making the playoffs.

Murdick wins Modified tour event at Mercer
Mercer, Pa.
Dave Murdick continued his hot streak Saturday night at Mercer Raceway Park, picking up the win in the annual visit of the BRP/Hoosier Tire Modified Tour to the shortest track on the circuit. Murdick’s win continued the domination by the Big Block Modifieds over the Approved Toilet Rentals 358 Modifieds that race weekly at the speedway.
Michael Bauer sped away from the field to grab a key win in the Bonnell’s Collision Center Outlaw Sprint Warriors. Pete Blazak won the Mini Stocks offered by Eperthener’s Auto Wrecking and Ray’s Racing Collectibles. Bob Schwartzmiller scored another win in the Precise Racing Products Stock Cars, while Rick St. Pierre carried the day in the PA Vintage Modified class.

Federer seeded 7th, Djokovic is No. 1

Roger Federer is seeded No. 7 for the U.S. Open, his first slot outside the top three at any Grand Slam tournament in a decade.
Federer’s ranking dropped two slots to seventh Monday, and the U.S. Tennis Association’s seedings followed the ATP standings.
Federer’s record 17 Grand Slam titles include five at the U.S. Open. He’s among five former champions in the men’s field, including No. 1-seeded Novak Djokovic, No. 2 Rafael Nadal, and No. 3 Andy Murray, who won the 2012 title.
Federer was seeded No. 1 at 18 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments from 2004-08.
He hadn’t been seeded outside the top three at the U.S. Open since he was 13th in 2002.
