Miss Ohio to visit

WARREN

Miss Ohio Heather Wells, a Howland High School and Kent State University graduate who will compete in the Miss American pageant later this month, will give a local preview Friday.

Wells will model the clothes she will wear at the Miss USA pageant and the talent she will perform at a 6:30 p.m. fundraiser at Aulizio’s Banquet & Catering Center, 4395 Youngstown Road SE.

Cost for the event, which includes dinner, is $25, and proceeds will help Wells make the trip.

Fires extinguished

WARREN

Firefighters extinguished two fires early Monday, at 1640 Hamilton St. SW and at the Current factory at 455 North River Road NW.

The house on Hamilton is occupied, but no one was home at the time of the 2:01 a.m. fire, and no one was injured.

The two-story home sustained $12,000 in damage after the fire started in the second-floor bedroom. The cause is under investigation.

At 3:30 a.m., firefighters were called to the factory fire, which was confined to one $750,000 piece of machinery that overheated.

The company makes circuit boards for the electronics industry. The company’s sprinkler system “held the fire at bay until firefighters arrived,” Warren Fire Chief Ken Nussle said. No one was injured.

Vacant homes burn

Two vacant homes were a total loss after fires early Monday.

Crews arrived at 821 Norwood Ave. about 4:10 a.m. and found a heavy fire shooting out of the sides of the house and a heavily secured side door. The front door was not secured, reports said. Inside, the floor had several holes burned into it, reports said. The cause is listed as arson, and the damage estimate is $4,200. No one was injured.

Earlier, a 212 Lincoln Park Drive home also was a total loss, reports said. Crews arriving on the scene found heavy flames coming from the attic, and a search revealed no one inside. The cause is under investigation. Damage is estimated at $9,800.

Man sentenced

LISBON

A 28-year-old New Waterford man was sentenced to five years in prison when he appeared in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court on Monday on charges that he helped to buy chemicals to make methamphetamine and also helped to make it.

Bradley Carpenter was one of three people arrested in a February at a 3618 Silliman St. home in New Waterford where officers were investigating an endangering-children complaint, a news release from the Columbiana County Prosecutor’s office said.

A second person, Daniel Todd, no age given, pleaded guilty Monday and will be sentenced in October. A third person is set for trial in November, the release said.

Road closing

Hazel Street will be closed between Rayen and Lincoln avenues from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday for the 2013 Youngstown State University Welcome Event.

Special meeting

Liberty

Liberty Township trustees will have a special meeting at noon today at the administration building, 1315 Church Hill-Hubbard Road. Allied Waste, water issues and other township business will be discussed.

Champion Band Night

Champion High School will host a band night at 7:30 p.m. today at the high school stadium, 5976 Mahoning Ave. NW. Participating bands include Windham, LaBrae, Lowellville, Warren G. Harding, Hubbard and a closing performance by the Champion band. Cost is $5 and $3 for students or senior citizens.

Road closings at park

West Drive, West Glacier Drive, Price Road and the Price Road entrance to Fellow Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park will be closed from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday for the Covelli Panerathon, park officials have announced.

Howland Band Night

Howland Band Night will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Howland Stadium. Participating bands include Matthews, Niles, Liberty, Boardman, Lakeview and a performance by Howland to close the event. Tickets will be available at the door.

Delegation from China

YOUNGSTOWN

The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley will host a delegation of high-level Chinese Red Cross ambassadors at a reception from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency, 700 Industrial Road.

“The visit from the Red Cross of China is meant to strengthen the friendship of our international mission and share knowledge,” said Karen E. Conklin, executive director of the American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley.

Scheduled speakers include George Brown, Boardman Fire Chief; Dennis O’Hara, Mahoning County EMA Assistant Director; and Conklin, who will explain how the Red Cross works with other organizations when responding to local emergencies.

Before the Red Cross reception, the Chinese delegation will be guests at a luncheon sponsored by the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber.

Sentenced for drugs

PITTSBURGH

A 35-year-old New Castle, Pa., man, who pleaded guilty to drug distribution conspiracy in an oxycodone trafficking ring, has been sentenced in federal court to 87 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

David Wooley drew the sentence Monday from U.S. District Court Judge Arthur J. Schwab. Wooley was a distributor of the drug, and a drug and money courier between Florida and Pennsylvania, the U.S. attorney said.

In September 2010, police stopped Wooley in North Carolina on his way to Florida and said they found $158,409 in cash hidden inside his car door. The drug was being bought in Florida for $14 a pill and resold for up to $25 a pill in New Castle, the U.S. attorney said.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Pennsylvania State and New Castle police.

School open house

Hubbard

St. Patrick School will have its open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday.

Parents and students may come and meet the principal and teachers. The first day of school is Monday. Students should bring their school supplies with them. Students with lockers will be able to set them up during the open house. Kindergarten through third-grade students should bring their supplies in a bag labeled with the student’s name on it. Teachers will replenish students supplies through out the year from their individual bags. Uniform items will be available to buy during the open house as well as placing lunch orders, and kindergarten through third-graders will be able to place their daily drink order for snack time. There will be staff on hand to answer any questions. Anyone who cannot attend the open house may send their child’s supplies with them on the first day of school.

Prior to his consecration, Bishop Hollingsworth, who describes himself as “a grateful, recovering alcoholic in his 28th year of sobriety,” served in California, Kentucky, and Massachusetts as an elementary school chaplain, parish priest, and diocesan staff member, respectively. He is on the Executive Council of The Episcopal Church as well as a number of educa-tional and institutional boards.

Computer classes

The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership, 1325 Fifth Ave., is offering free computer literacy classes weekly until the end of September for Mahoning County residents who would like to learn simple, basic computer skills.

Upon completion of the six-hour class, which is for adults 18 and over, participants will have a better understanding about a computer, keyboard and how to use what they learned to obtain information.

Class dates and times are: Today through Thursday: 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m.; next Tuesday through Aug. 29: 10 a.m. to noon and 5 to 6 p.m.; Sept. 4-6: 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.; Sept. 10-12: 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m.; Sept. 17-19: 10 a.m. to noon; Sept. 24-26: 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

Faces drug charges

A man was charged with possession of drugs late Sunday on a South Side street after police found 76 Darvocet pills in his car.

Reports said officers pulled over a car just before midnight at Hillman and Delason avenues for having no license plate light and when they checked inside the found a pill bottle, reports said.

The driver, Johnny Eiland, 53, said the pills were his and he did not have a prescription, reports said. Eiland was also given a citation for having no license plate light, reports said.

Port authority meeting

VIENNA

The Western Reserve Port Authority, which runs the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport and carries out economic development, will have its regular monthly meeting at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 28 at the airport.

The port’s committee meetings, all at the airport, are as follows: Aviation Committee 3 p.m. Tuesday; Intermodal/Enviromental, 1 p.m. Thursday; Economic Development, 2 p.m. Monday; Administration, 3:30 p.m. Monday.
