Familiar face: Former YSU quarterback Tom Zetts (2003-07) was one of the officials at Saturday’s scrimmage. When asked about senior quarterback Kurt Hess nearing many of his passing records, Zetts smiled and said, “I knew that was going to happen since he was a freshman and had a big year.” Zetts holds YSU career records for attempts (1,094), completions (654) and passing yards (7,643) but he said his most meaningful record is the one for career starts: 47. “That meant I played every game for four years,” he said. “And that 47 means I played three playoff games. Otherwise, it would have been 44. The rest of them [records] are just numbers.” Zetts and the Penguins lost to Appalachian State, 49-24, in the national semifinals in 2006 when the Mountaineers were in the middle of a three-title run. “They were so fast,” Zetts said. “[Quarterback] Armanti Edwards was like trying to tackle a ghost. But I’d love a second shot at them.”
Happy and healthy: YSU held its second (and final) scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday and Coach Eric Wolford played it safe, holding out a half-dozen starters on both sides of the ball. “I like the fact that we got out of here healthy,” Wolford said. When asked about his concerns with less than two weeks to the opener, Wolford said, “No concerns at all. None at all. I have a good football team.” YSU is off today and is scheduled to hold morning practices on Monday and Tuesday. Classes begin Wednesday.
New rules: Among the new rules for the 2013 season are stiffer penalties for targeting fouls (i.e. fouls where players lead with the crown of the helmet or target the head or neck of opposing players with the helmet, forearm, shoulder or elbow). Those now result in automatic ejections instead of just 15-yard penalties. “It’s as easy as this,” Wolford said. “You know as a player when you’re taking a cheap shot at a guy. At the end of the day, if you don’t take cheap shots, you’ll be fine.”
