YSU gets money for STEM scholarships

Youngstown State Uni- versity’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics received $672,000 to be used over two years for student scholarships.

It’s a renewal of the Choose Ohio First program the university first received in 2007 as part of a consortium of Ohio universities.

The scholarships are for between $1,500 and $5,200 for students in the STEM College and may be renewed as long as the student meets requirements, said Stephen Rodabaugh, associate STEM dean.

The first $1,500 of each scholarship is merit-based, while the remainder is based on need.

“The Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program awards Ohio colleges, universities and their business partners that have developed innovative academic programs to recruit and retain more Ohio students into STEM fields,” according to the Choose Ohio First website.

The site says that so far, the scholarships have been awarded to more than 4,000 students in 28 programs involving 41 Ohio public and private institutions.

The scholarships apply after other financial aid has been applied.

Students must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average, participate in campus events and attend meetings to keep the scholarships.
