Memorial work to be done for anniversary

WASHINGTON

Officials say refinishing work on the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial should be complete by the upcoming 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

There had been concerns that work wouldn’t be done in time.

Workers have been removing a disputed inscription from the side of a granite stone monument of King. But officials ran into problems when the main contractor on the project didn’t have the insurance required to complete the work, which included sandblasting the surface with an aggregate material.

The National Park Service announced that workers from the Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center are doing the work and have found a new material to use. The project is expected to take at most a few days. The anniversary of the march is Aug. 28.
