Marquee winners revealed

CANFIELD

Salem Community Theater has won the Marquee Award for Best Musical for its production of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” while the award for Best Play went to the Oakland Center for the Arts for “The Normal Heart.”

Based on the AIDS crisis in New York City in the ’80s, “The Normal Heart” won seven awards.

The Youngstown Area Community Theater Alliance (YACTA), sponsors of the Marquee Awards, revealed the 2012-13 season winners in an awards ceremony Saturday evening at St. Michael’s Church Hall. The annual awards honor the best in community theater in the Mahoning Valley.

The Oakland and the Victorian Players Theater each snared a total of eight awards, while the Youngstown Playhouse and Stage Left Players won six apiece.
