Weathersfield Township trustees will apply for state funding for a safety upgrade and repaving program on Warner Road from Niles-Carver Road to Chestnut Street.

David Rouan, township admin-istrator, will apply for a 69 percent grant, or $74,938, from the Ohio Public Works Commission.

The local share will be 31 percent, which will be $33,667 — $25,667 from the township and $8,000 in in-kind engineering and construction super-vision from the Trumbull County Engineer’s office.

Trustees this week also authorized Rouan to seek bids for pre-demolition asbestos surveys for both 2185 Gardenland Ave. and 612 McDonald Ave., Niles.

Rouan will choose a contractor and receive at least two estimates for the demolitions.

The work is being paid for by the state attorney general office’s Moving Forward Grant. Trustees condemned the properties and marked them for demolition in July.

The total demolition cost is not to exceed $10,000, with the township paying half.

Trustees also approved extending the current trash-collection contract with Allied Waste/Republic Services for two more years ending Dec. 31, 2015.

The rate of $413.95 per quarter will continue for once-a-week garbage collection with a 95-gallon cart and every-other-week recycling collection with an 18-gallon bin.

Allied has also agreed to enhance communication with township residents by using a new state-of-the-art phone system.

Fliers are also to be mailed to residents before Dec. 31 to offer them a 65-gallon or 95-gallon recycling cart for a fee of 95 cents per month. The carts would be similar to the refuse carts now being used in the township.

Trustees also established the Weathersfield Township Business Development Initiative. The network will consist of township businesses and residents who own businesses outside of Weathersfield to meet monthly and exchange ideas, attract new business opportunities and provide a conduit for township- related business to explore opportunities to do business with one another.

Gil Blair, trustee chairman, said the initiative’s goal is to try “to bring our business community under one umbrella, both township businesses and outside the township, to work together.”
