Garage fire damages motorcycles, ’56 car

Fire reports say three motorcycles and a classic car were damaged in a fire at a 1703 S. Heights Ave. detached garage about 7:20 a.m. today.

Crews called to the fire had to force open a garage door to get inside to put the fire out, reports said. The fire appears to have started in a tool room in the garage, reports said. A woman who lives in the home said she heard a loud boom, and that’s when she noticed the fire in the garage. The owner of the garage said he was inside about 15 minutes before the fire broke out.

Destroyed were 1994, 1997 and 2007 Harley- Davidson motorcycles and a 1956 Chevrolet sedan, reports said. They are insured, reports said.

Damage is listed at $28,000. No one was injured.

Howland Safety Day

The Howland Fire Department will have a safety day at Kmart, 2100 Niles- Cortland Road SE, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

Safety Day will include car-seat inspections, a bike-safety rodeo, the fire-safety trailer, poison safety, fire engines and ambulances.

The following organizations will participate: Howland police; Ohio State Highway Patrol; Youngstown Air Reserve Station Fire Department; Trumbull County Help Me Grow; Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board; Safe Surfin Foundation (Internet safety); Trumbull County Safe Communities; Trumbull County Red Cross; Smokey the Fire Dog; and the Stat Medevac helicopter.

Bike-trail event set

WARREN

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 in the Warren G. Harding High School parking lot, 860 Elm Road NE, to celebrate the completion of the south end of the Warren Bike Trail.

Participants are invited to bring their bicycle and ride to the south end of the bike trail and back.

Lane restrictions

HOWLAND

Beginning Monday, state Route 82 between state Route 5 and state Route 46 will have various daily lane restrictions for resurfacing. This work is the start of a $3.1 million resurfacing project, which also includes miscellaneous bridge repairs in the area. The entire project should be finished by early November.

Free vision workshop

North lIma

Dr. Joseph Pederzolli of EyeCare and Vision Therapy Center, 11995 South Ave., will host a free vision and learning workshop from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 25.

More than 20 percent of students have vision problems that interfere with learning. Guests will learn about learning-related vision problems and how to test for and identify them. The event will offer interaction with other teachers and parents, providing a safe place to ask questions and find answers.
